I really LOVE the handheld look - with everything shot on a gimbal, it gets boring fast. Critically watching my favourite movies and long-form streaming series, it's clear that camera movement mirroring subject action is an effective cinematic technique to make the viewer more engaged with the story or the content. Take that intro to Saving Private Ryan for example, or the first episode of Lost. So, a few days before the lockdown, I ditched the gimbal and took the A7Siii, 55mm f/1.8 and a Marumi variable ND out for a walk with the spectacularly gorgeous Mrs Fairclough. It was EXTREMELY muddy, like over-the-top-of-your-boots muddy. So, getting smooth ninja-steps was nigh-on impossible. I'm impressed by how the stabilisation held up. There are some warp artefacts when my footsteps got too heavy in the mud, and also my technique is extremely sloppy as I usually lean heavily on a gimbal for moving shots. But overall I'm absolutely loving the look and feel, it's raw, it's got energy, and you get the feeling of being there in the moment. Let me know what you think in the comments :) All shot handheld on A7Siii in SLOG3 SGamut3.Cine, XAVC HS 4k 50p 4:2:2 10 Bit with the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 Lens and Marumi Variable ND.
