Fusion energy faces challenges that go far beyond plasma physics. In this session from the MIT Independent Activities Period (IAP) course “Business of Fusion Energy,” we examine the execution constraints that will shape how, and how fast, fusion energy can scale from experimental devices to commercial power plants. Drawing on industry surveys, supply-chain data, and policy studies, the session focuses on the non-science limits to fusion deployment, including financing structures, material availability, manufacturing capacity, regulation, and workforce readiness. Key topics include: Feedstock constraints, including tritium scarcity and breeding timelines Supply-chain bottlenecks for critical materials, components, and fabrication Geographic concentration and geopolitical risk in fusion supply chains How demand, cost, and deployment create reinforcing feedback loops Talent gaps across engineering, manufacturing, and skilled trades Public sentiment, regulation, and institutional readiness The session also introduces a timeline of critical execution hurdles, highlighting how constraints evolve from financing in the 2020s to feedstock, supply-chain, and workforce challenges in the decades that follow.
