Naturally with old aircraft, like these forty-year old B-1 bombers, things can go wrong. In this case, CONGA27 returned to RAF Fairford from a mission over Iran with a case of hung ordnance - in other words, the button has been pressed but the bomb didn’t release and is still sitting ‘live’ in the bomb bay. The standard procedure with hung ordnance is very strict. An emergency is declared and after landing and the fire crew are deployed. In this case, one truck with three firefighters was mobilised to join the B-1 on the taxiway after it vacated the runway. One of the firefighters inspected the aircraft externally before returning to the truck and allowing the B-1 to head back to its parking spot. Meanwhile, out of view, other Fairford fire trucks were keeping their distance along with the ground crew and other members of staff. Since the B-1 Lancers deployed to RAF Fairford a few weeks ago, this appears to be a fairly regular occurrence with the aircraft returning from operations.
