The third part of this series covers the first part of the cruise, from the departure from Ushuaia to the passage from the Falkland Islands to South Georgia. After a day at sea we arrived in New Island, which is in the far west of the Falkland islands. We could not land at the initial spot, but at an alternative one (North Harbour). From there, we could see Magellanic penguins, Gentoo penguins, and rockhopper penguins. The latter share the steep cliffs with black-browed albatrosses for breeding. Striated caracaras were waiting for their chances nearby. After leaving New Island, lots of albatrosses followed the ship. We could not land at Westpoint as originally planned, so we sailed on to Stanley, where we spent the next day. The small town is "very British" and inter alia features an interesting museum, which is not the only place commemorating the Falkland war. An included bus shuttle brought us to Gipsy Cove and to Yorke Bay, where Magellanic penguins and Gentoo penguins breed (the former in burrows in the ground). The next two days were spent at sea for the passage to South Georgia. On the second day, lots of humpback whales were around the ship (even very close to the vessel). We also saw our first iceberg, suitably named "The Stairs". 00:00 Overview of the cruise 00:39 Departure from Ushuaia 02:05 New Island 05:50 Albatrosse at sea 06:37 Stanley 09:05 Gipsy Cove 09:27 Yorke Bay 11:07 Lots of humpback whales 13:52 The first iceberg (The Stairs)
