Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) differs in a number of respects from Western scientific ways of knowing: it's very specific to place, it's built up from the long-term observation of many generations, and it's encoded into a broader set of cultural practices and beliefs. Robin Wall Kimmerer is a trained plant ecologist and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and has built a career of bridging between scientific and traditional ecological forms of knowledge. She advocates sustainable harvesting of the products of the land that involves rituals of permission asking and thanksgiving. These rituals acknowledge and reinforce a sense of relationship and reciprocity with the land that we live on.
