Transcript - Gynecomastia in most cases is idiopathic or we can't din a specific cause for the gynecomastia in a majority of the patients who get referred to us. I would say about 85% of gynecomastia patients that are seen do not have a specific cause for the enlargement of the male breast tissue. It seems to be possibly that the receptors in the breast tissue of these male patients are just more sensitive to female hormones which causes progressive increase in the amount of breast tissue in these patients. There are however some definite causes as well and we need to investigate and ask the patient about these at every consultation. A lot of medications can cause enlargement of male breast tissue. Things like Sametadine which is a medication used for heartburn, you can have steroids which if the patient is taking steroids that can cause stimulation of breast tissue. You can have recreational drugs that can do the same so there can be some chemical that can be causing it. You can have tumours in the male body. Tumours of the testis, tumours in the pituitary which is in the brain which produce hormones and that can stimulate breast tissue to give gynecomastia. You can also get gynecomastia associated with liver disease so again this is something that needs to be investigated and checked out as well. In those patients whom we suspect that there might be a specific cause for it I will ask for a hormonal level screen in the patient and blood tests can sometimes give you an idea as to whether there is a specific cause for the gynecomastia. zuffbloss
