The One Word Stage is a universal phenomenon in human development. Why is this so? When human infants encounter language they must learn words, but also deduce from the sentences that they hear, how words can be combined syntactically. Syntax allows us to move beyond the individual words that we have learned, so that we can formulate and infinite number of expressions, that in turn, can express an infinite number of ideas. However, infants have not yet learned the syntax of their native language when they begin to speak. Rather, they will produce isolated referring expressions, usually individual nouns, though to a lesser extent verbs and adjectives in single word utterances -- hence the name 'The One Word Stage'. Children will transition out of the One Word Stage only after they have learned enough syntax to do so. Deducing the syntax of one's native language itself is a process that is in part experiential (dependent on the sentences we hear) and part maturational -- (dependent on the development of the brain).
