🚨We accidentally referenced the Beverage Testing Institute as Beverage Tasting Institute🚨 In this episode of Our Pour Decisions we are ditching the wine and pouring ourselves a glass of bourbon- or 5! We blind taste 5 bourbons made by the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Van Winkle 12 Lot B Weller CYPB Pappy Van Winkle 15 Pappy Van Winkle 20 Eagle Rare Will Pops be able to tell a difference between a $50 dollar bourbon and a $3000 dollar bourbon??? Since Pappy is produced by the Buffalo Trace Distillery, we thought it only fitting to go on a road trip. So B, Jeff, and I rented a Suburban a headed for our Frankfort for a guided tour to learn about the history of Pappy straight from the source. The legend of Pappy goes all the way back to 1893 and Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. At the age of 18 Pappy would work as a salesman for the W.L Weller & Sons, learning the business, and would later become a co-owner. The second generation, “Pappy’s” son, was Julian Van Winkle Jr. And after returning from the war with a purple heart, he continued his fathers legacy even after being forced to sell the family distillery by resurrecting the van winkle brand. Today it’s hard to imagine the time when bourbon was out of favor, but that’s just how it was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Maybe it was luck, maybe it was fortuitous timing, but things turned around for the Van Winkle brand when Julian III, Pappy’s grandson, released the worlds first 20 year old bourbon in 1994. Soon thereafter, in 1996 everything changed after Pappy 20 was submitted to the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago where it was awarded a 99/100- the highest rating the Beverage Institute had ever given a whiskey. And that’s how the Pappy craze got its start. Special shoutout to our participants at Buffalo Trace! And shoutout to Corey and Jeremy from Buffalo Trace for all of their help in making this video possible. Subscribe to Jeremy's channel Barstools & Bourbon for more bourbon content! We truly had an amazing experience touring Buffalo Trace and recommend trying to get a reservation for their free tasting.
