‘Something Good’ by Utah Saints is another classic UK techno house track in a style popularised by the likes of KLF, The Shamen etc. in the early 1990’s. Originally released in 1992 it was redone to great effect in 2008. I volunteered to have a try at doing this on one of the Facebook Circuit Tracks groups and it has been particularly challenging! At the heart of the track is a clever sample from Kate Bush’s song ‘Cloudbusting’ (the only time she ever cleared a sample for use in other peoples work). Typical of the technology of the time the sample is pitched up and time stretched by sampling it and then manipulating the pitch and tempo using pitch bend – trying to do that with my computer and Circuit Tracks tested my abilities! I didn’t completely succeed but hope the end result isn’t too far from the original for your ears - sounds a bit out of tune still to me. (I don’t feel so bad as the band are quoted as saying they spent a week of 18 hour days just working on this sample..) Deconstructing 90’s tracks just increases my respect for the artists who originally created these pieces with limited gear and lots of imagination. Initially the song is played entirely on a single Novation Circuit Tracks – there is a 4-bar loop with a sampled ‘italo-house’ style piano section – but everything else is purely the Tracks. Recorded direct from the audio outs without any processing or extra effects. Also – the 1992 and 2008 versions are very different – I took extreme liberties and tried to mimic some of the elements of both. The arrangement is my own and probably owes a bit more to Kate Bush than the Utah Saints did. Stay listening too, as after the fade I’ve added an extra version with an Ableton Move adding some extra sampled ‘piano’ and ‘fuzz guitar’ samples sequenced on MIDI 1&2 on the Tracks. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for more soon! More details for synth nerds. 129 BPM TRACKS Synth 1 – Sawtooth and square wave bass patch playing main sequence. Synth 2 – sawtooth ‘string’ style patch with chorus, detuning and slow attack. MIDI 1 – ‘piano’ sequence (plays later on Move) MIDI 2 – ‘fuzz guitar’ sequence (plays later on Move) Drum 1 – 909 bass drum sample Drum 2 – 909 snare sample Drum 3 - 909 closed and open hihats (with echo) Drum 4 – vocal samples (‘utah saints’ and ‘something good’ samples created by stem separation on original sources. Edited to pitch and timestretched on Mac.) MOVE The Move is linked by USB-C from the Tracks to USB-A to drive it purely as a MIDI multitimbral expansion. No sequences ran on the Move. MIDI channel 3 - Sampler instrument with ‘acoustic piano’ sample MIDI channel 4 – Sampler instrument with ‘distorted guitar’ sample and added saturation.
