Retro fitting DRLs to MX-5 NB (2.5) / Miata, replacing factory Fog Lamps (UK Road Legal) The process illustrated here can be dangerous: risk of injury while undertaking the installation, under bonnet electrical fires, incorrectly fitted lighting causing Road Traffic Collision. For information only, seek professional/competent assistance if unsure. Time codes: 0 - 40s Demo of DRLs. 0.40 - 5.25 Intro: background to DRL, Parts, Road Legality & Safety Considerations. 5.25 - 6.35 Mount Heights & Positions. 6.35 - 16.00 Unboxing. Installing lamp units using bumper bracket & routing wires to engine bay. 16.00 - 17.25 Engine bay wiring connection points. 17.25 - 18.13 Demo & Daytime Driving Footage. Research findings suggest that DRL (Daytime Running Lights) reduce accidents by making cars more visible. They became a mandatory fitment on new cars in 2011, and thus have become ever more common on UK roads over the last decade. Consequently, older cars without DRL’s have become less conspicuous on the roads. Given where I live & drive the car, on the South Coast of England in the summer time, I never use front fog lights. Daytime Running Lights would therefore be far more useful for making the car more visible on the sun dappled tree canopied A & B roads of Hampshire, Sussex, Dorset and Devon where I enjoy driving the car, as well as the more mundane urban driving situations. This YouGov link gives some background on DRL’s and their (optional) retro fitment to older cars in the UK (United Kingdom): https://www.gov.uk/government/publica.... Simply turning on your dipped headlamps during daylight hours will make your MX-5 more conspicuous, and it is perfectly legal to do so. However, driving with your front fog lights on when visibility is not severely reduced would contravene UK Highway Code Rule 236: You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users. Using your dipped headlights during the day will obviously burn out front and rear bulbs quicker, however they are easily accessed and cheap to replace on an MX-5 (dashboard illumination bulbs a bit tricker to access). In combination, these front and rear lights will be a couple hundred watts, resulting in very slightly higher fuel consumption - but safety always takes priority in ‘EcoSafe’ driving principles. Also, if you predominantly do short journeys, the added daily electrical draw may mean the battery doesn’t get fully recharged. So, there are some benefits to justify the cost and effort of retro fitting modern low power consumption, highly visible, highly durable LED Daytime Running Lights for increased safety. Later models of the MX-5 NB (chassis no. 404535 onwards) were fitted with 90mm round fog lamps with ‘Cibie’ branding on the lenses. These generic Cibie/Valeo fog lamp units (Valeo Fogstar part no. 088358) are mounted to the MX-5’s bumper using an adaptor plate, Mazda part no. NE01 51684. Magneti Marelli, an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), has produced a modern LED version of these Cibie Fogstar lamps (Part no. : MAGNETI MARELLI Daytime Running Light Set 713120117010). The outer casing is an exact fit to the MX-5 bumper adaptor plate; so just 3 screws to swap the units over. As an OEM manufacturer, Magneti Marelli has tested and certified this complete LED lighting module as road legal, and ‘E’ / ‘RL’ marked the lens accordingly i.e. what MoT Testers check for*. *Note that merely inserting an LED bulb into the original Cibie halogen holders is NOT road legal, and the use of LED bulbs has been specifically tightened in the January 2021 update of the MoT Test. Assuming the car hasn’t been drastically lowered, the original Fog Lamp locations of the MX-5 (NB) sit within the acceptable mounting location range for DRL lighting (i.e. between 250mm and 1500mm from ground; a maximum 400mm in from the outer edges of the car, and with 600mm minimum between the two lights). Engine Bay Wiring Connection Points: Switched Live Feed: spade connector into front right position of either the white connector (black wire, white stripe) or black connector (orange wire) mounted to the plastic heat shield near air box intake tube. Ground: any suitable earthing point/bolt to metal chassis (e.g. Diagnostic port mounting bracket bolt). OFF Trigger: Red wire coming from park/side light bulb holder. This solution maintains the car’s original look, while making what is a very small car by contemporary standards far more conspicuous on the road amongst modern cars all displaying LED Daytime Running Lights. It leaves the original fog lamp wiring loom untouched, so simple to reinstall front fog lamps if ever needed (FRONT fog lamps are not a legal requirement in the UK, a rear fog lamp is).
