At nineteen, he took up smoking during his rural placement and has smoked for most of his life; even when doctors advised him to quit, he would only agree to cut down. At twenty-three, he left Peking University to endure a decade in Guangxi's remote mountains. Criticised for retaining intellectual habits, he persisted in reading and writing by oil lamp on field ridges. Having devoted forty years to Nietzsche's study—from scholarly treatises to aphoristic compendiums—he contends Nietzsche's greatness lies not in providing answers, but in embodying through his life the arduous imperative: ‘Become who you are.’ He embodied this philosophy in his very existence: refusing to yield to age, steadfastly nurturing creative vitality and intellectual vigour. This marked both the culmination of his Nietzschean scholarship and a life-written footnote—a testament to living boundless freedom and possibility within fate's constraints.
