No more yearning and pondering. It's time to move away from the storm and start anew. ever since i first listened to the original in my hotel room at a room party during Furs Upon Malaysia, Linger in the Rain has always resonated with me. another emotional Yon song that focuses on the despair of having lost someone and being unable to get over it, holding on desperately to the fragments of one's former relationship. while not exactly going through something like this, but a lot of the lyrics were definitely relatable. the line, "Did I say something in the past? Or were my problems far too vast?" really stung for sure. as a person with similar problems back then. as such, i decided to try and reflect the sorrow that this song was meant to reflect. from the many extremely jazzy chords to the addition of accidentals, this definitely was even more jazzy than Memory Merge. i did spend a few weeks on certain passages, trying to make sure the chord progression was just right as i felt that it was the most important part in showcasing the intensity in my arrangement, sometimes even hours and days on just one bar. there were also a lot of additional original passages, such as right before the bridge, and even changing the mood of the intro. these original passages were both meant to add to the story i wanted to convey, as said below. changing the intro to have a more depressed and quiet tone was a choice i made as the original mood not translating well to the piano in my opinion, as well as being a factor in the buildup and progression of emotions. this, the first verse and the first chorus, being played at a more tranquil yet still maintaining their subtle intensity via the chords, represented the first third of my arrangement - the calm before the storm. it slowly built up into the mini saxophone solo which then began to turn up the atmosphere, where the second verse has more ornaments representing scattered raindrops that signified the start of the storm. the quick introduction of three hand technique (as always) added onto to this even more, with each note the storm grew nearer. and then finally, with the second chorus, it arrived. the use of deep and drawn out bass notes were meant to represent thunder, with faster runs to show a higher intensity of the rain. we do get a small breather from the chaotic storm with a transition i added, but it was only meant to build up further to the height of the sorrow - as sometimes a storm does fluctuate a bit with its intensity. the bridge with the key change into B minor really hits hard every time, especially when listening to the original song, so i went all out to showcase that, be it through fast, erratic runs, or the usage of even more loud, heavy, ringy bass notes, and using the whole range of the piano. but then, it stops. fading out like how a storm does, we venture out from it back into peace and tranquility. this section with chromatic notes i added was meant to be a reflection of the final buildup and chorus, but also replacing it - i did not want to end the arrangement so quickly. i felt that the original song ended too abruptly, as whilst the fade out works for a production, it does not on the piano imo. as such, i used this opportunity to transition from the F# add7add11 chord into a brighter B major key. suddenly, the song shifts in tonality! for those fellow Animenz fans, yes i did add a finale inspired by his My Dearest, Sayonara Memories and Owari no Sekai Kara arrangements - the final mention being my attempt at a "good end" as he said. with the same structure by doing a series of double hand runs every chord, i recreated the chorus in B major while adding more hopefulness; maybe there is chance at redemption and starting anew, in spite of everything that happened in the past - which is referenced by motifs of the original finale being added in, yet ultimately moving on in spite of the fragments of the past holding onto you. As such, instead of the open ending in the original, being the music nerd i am, i decided to make it a full story and end it with a proper ending. as such, the whole arrangement ends even more brightly, even referencing the chord progression of the final bars of my own Dandelion arrangement, except instead of ending it on an open E major chord, i decided to fully wrap up the story and let it feel finished, with a decisive B major chord. the persona finally is at peace, and does not grasp at a broken and ultimately unrealistic possibility - they will now bask in the sunlight. thank you all for sticking it out and supporting me in the months leading up to this arrangement's release, it really means a lot. it really feels like it'll decisively be my best work for a while, but we'll see. x3 see y'all next time!!!
