You know what doesn't mix well with a knee? Another person's knee. Moving quickly in the opposite direction. Skates also. Knee on knee hits in the NHL and ice hockey in general are a dangerous play that thankfully doesn't happen with too much frequency. One or both players can end up injured, and the collisions themselves usually look quite gnarly to boot. Video chapters: Intro: 0:00 What is a knee on knee hit? 0:44 -It's exactly what it sounds like! Two knees colliding together going opposite directions. Why do they happen? 1:18 -There are a few different scenarios that can take place. Players can try to get out of the way of an incoming hit and end up hitting knees. The checking player can see the other player is going to get around them and try to get anything in front of them to stop them. The hit can also be a "dirty" play of bad intentions but this seems less common as both players may end up injured. Why are they dangerous? 2:14 -Skates! -Because skates glide, both feet are planted at the moment of impact. Impact on weight bearing knees is not usually a good thing. However, because skates glide this also means the foot normally doesn't stay planted through the impact which is helpful in avoiding more serious ruptures when compared to sports where players wear cleats. The Case of Zach Hyman. 3:54 -Here comes the big one. The case study. -In this case, Edler is dog tired (end of a really long shift). Hyman is coming back across the blue line. Hyman cuts back to the middle and Edler leaves his leg out. Knee to knee, game over. Hyman sustains an MCL sprain of the right knee. -In this section I break down the Medial Collateral Ligament, what it does, and how it may have been injured based on the type of hit! Recovery from MCL sprains. 7:08 -It's acute ligament recovery! Much of it is symptom based once the swelling and pain get themselves calmed down. The timeline really varies based on the degree of the sprain, with less severe ones being in the days-weeks category while full ruptures may require surgery and being out of sport for months. For free videos about the human body, injuries, rehabilitation, the world of Physiotherapy, and whatever other shenanigans comes along. Maybe you can learn something new and not feel like you're stuck in a classroom waiting for the bell to ring. A Physio Named Jonah is a channel created by, well, exactly who you think. The channel features primarily Physiotherapy based topics, or things that it would make sense for a Physical Therapist to weigh in on. The goal is to make these often sterile topics interesting and easily accessible to anyone with a few laughs (or forced exhales from your nose if you're alone) along the way. Jonah is a Canadian Physiotherapist who works with a primarily outpatient orthopaedic population at a clinic in Sudbury, Ontario. He completed his Master's of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto, with his Bachelors of Sciences specialized in Human Kinetics coming from The University of Ottawa. He is also considered by his parents, girlfriend and two dogs to be a pretty cool guy. #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #rehab #physio #mapleleafshockey #kneeonknee #NHL
