THE ROLEX PRESIDENTIAL DAY-DATE REF. 1803 Rolex introduced the Day-Date in 1956, equipping the watch with the jump date mechanism made famous by the Datejust just a few years prior in 1945. What makes the Day-Date so special is that it also features the day spelled out in full at the 12-hour markers, a first not just for Rolex but in the history of watchmaking. Of course, the iconic dress watch also takes advantage of Rolex’s innovative waterproof Oyster case and Perpetual movement with automatic winding technology and a COSC rating. The Day-Date is also solely produced from precious metal, making it one of the most luxurious timepieces in existence. Men and women of influence around the world wear the Day-Date for its close association with success, power, and class. Reference 1803 came to market a few years after the Day-Date debuted in 1958. Among its many distinguishing features is a Pie Pan dial with edges that slope away from the dial, an acrylic crystal, a fluted bezel, and a three-link President bracelet with semi-circular links and a hidden Crownclasp. The case is 36mm in diameter and has a waterproof screw-down crown. Interestingly, ref. 1803 would be the last Day-Date to feature both the Pie Pan dial and acrylic crystal. Its successor, ref. 18038, would bring with it the newer scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a flat dial. This fact alone makes ref. 1803 very collectible. It is the quintessential vintage gold Rolex. Shop Rolex 1803: https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex/pre... PRESIDENT BRACELET The President bracelet is a cornerstone of the Day-Date collection, appearing solely on the Day-Date and some variations of the Lady-Datejust. Ref. 1803 features hollow links. However, it wasn’t long before Rolex upgraded the bracelet with more solid links in the following generations. The Bracelet is also distinguished by a clever hidden Crownclasp, which is virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the links on the bracelet except for a tiny Rolex coronet release. MOVEMENT Inside the case beats either the caliber 1555 or 1556 movement. Cal. 1555 beats at a rate of 18,000 bph, and cal. has a frequency of 19,800 bph. While the Quickset is not a staple of the Day-Date collection, neither movement was equipped with the convenient feature. The Quickset would be introduced when ref. 18038 hit the market. Additionally, the Double Quickset was introduced alongside its successor ref. 18238. NICKNAMES The name "President" is a somewhat unofficial one. While Rolex never recognizes nicknames given to watches by the collecting community, it once advertised the Day-Date as the “President’s Watch” after Lyndon B. Johnson was seen sporting the gold Rolex on his write while in office. It is believed that, initially, the term "President" only referred to the bracelet type. Today, the moniker applies to the entire watch. Who was the first President to wear the Day Date? Lyndon B. Johnson was the first President to wear the watch while in office. However, many former US presidents have been known to wear and own the watch since then. The list includes Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and JFK. Dwight Eisenhower is often mistakenly included in that list. However, the former 5-Star General and Commander in Chief actually owned a gold Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet, not a Day-Date.
