A sunny reggae-jazz tune that drifts forward without care, relaxed with afternoon calm, taking in open coastal air at ease. On this day in jazz history… On January 12, 1963, Donald Byrd assembled an all-star lineup at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs to record what became his landmark album A New Perspective. The trumpeter brought in Herbie Hancock on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and an eight-voice gospel choir directed by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. It was a bold move for hard bop jazz. Duke Pearson's arrangements bridged the spiritual and the sophisticated, letting the choir's wordless vocals blend with instrumental improvisation rather than dominate it. The session produced "Cristo Redentor," which became the album's signature track and one of the most successful fusions of gospel and jazz recorded up to that point. Released on Blue Note in 1964, A New Perspective remains a milestone in Byrd's career, proving that jazz could embrace its spiritual roots without sacrificing its edge. #LateNightJazz #ReggaeJazz #JazzGroove #InstrumentalJazz #CoastalJazz #IslandJazz #JazzPlaylist All music (including AI-assisted elements) and visuals are original, curated, and produced by Two Cats Jazz Radio.
