Located in the great Basilica of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy, the Spanish Chapel is arguably the most spectacular of the church’s decorative spaces. Originally built as the Chapter House of the Dominican convent, it was later transformed into the official chapel of the Spanish duchess of Florence, Eleonora of Toledo. The beautiful frescoes inside of the Spanish Chapel were painted in the 1360s by Andrea da Firenze and are not only prime examples of post-Black Death art, but they also show how Dominicans effectively used art as a teaching tool! ** NOTES AND RESOURCES ** 1.
