Dr. Kiran Kumar K | Appointment booking number: +91-9663516934 Consultant Psychiatrist & Director | The Nirvana Center, Marathahalli, Bangalore This is a question that runs in our clinical practice in patients who are suffering from various mental health conditions. Definitely most of the medical conditions, be it diabetes, be it hypertension, be it ischemic heart disease. Lot of psychiatric disorders have a genetic inheritance . It can run in families but the problem none is of a single gene inheritance , that is there is no one single gene that penetrates and results in psychiatric illness. However there are multiple genes or loci on the genes that area responsible for various psychiatric illness. The most common condition like schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, OCD, depression, ADHD in children, they are all highly heritable but it doesn’t mean that any person who is suffering from any psychiatric illness, it has to go to his offspring. There is a complex interplay between the gene and the environment which we call as epigenetic or the way we understand or an interplay between nature and nurturer. So if there is an interplay it is only the byproduct between the gene and the environment that can result in the manifestation of an illness. But can you prevent it? Definitely with the e available technology , there is no way we can make designer babies and prevent the illness but in future, this can be a reality. So how can we prevent this? What do we do when somebody in the mainly is suffering from psychiatric illness. Look for early signs and symptoms in the offspring and recognize those red flags early and go to a mental health professional and get it treated appropriately.
