Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) is one of the nine states of Austria, located in the northeastern corner of the country. With a land area of 19,186 km2 Lower Austria is the country's largest state. 2. In 1278 it was the scene of a decisive battle that brought the Habsburgs to power here. 3. Since 1986, the capital of Lower Austria has been Sankt Pölten, replacing Vienna which became a separate state in 1921. 4. After the Second World War, Lower Austria was in the Soviet zone of occupation. While elsewhere in Austria the economy could already begin to be rebuilt, many large companies here remained destroyed or were in the hands of the Soviet USIA. Austria's reparations to the Soviet Union were made, among other things, in the form of crude oil that was extracted in the Marchfeld. 5. Since 2015, the electricity consumed in Lower Austria has been generated entirely from renewable energies. 6. For Lower Austria, day tourism from the Vienna agglomeration is particularly important from an economic point of view. The country presents itself as a natural leisure area for all seasons. The country has gained significantly in overnight tourism thanks to guests from Central and Eastern European countries.
