I took on this project after discovering a music colleague and friend of mine (and one of the few IRL friends I have that likes video game music!) arranged this song for wind quintet! I have performed Richard's woodwind quintet pieces in the past and I was so excited to produce this arrangement. The Hyrule field themes in the Zelda franchise are iconic and this track is no exception. What a fantastic tune that combines several motifs & moods into one theme. By the end of this project, I developed a new appreciation for this track. In analyzing the overworld themes more, I came to realize that no other Zelda overworld theme features three distinct "cycles" -- day, danger, and night. Most feature one, daytime theme, or a combo (Twilight Princess' version, for example, features day & danger) but this track is so lengthy and complex due to its inclusion of those three cycles. Of course, in composing an overworld theme, you have to consider the amount of time spent listening to it, so it's no wonder every single one in the franchise is so iconic and unique! Speaking of music legends, I recruited the DREAM TEAM for this project and major shout out to my friends who endured these hard parts. Flute and clarinet had some seriously tricky passages and it made me grateful for my somewhat-easy oboe and English horn parts. It is tough knowing that we won't be playing together in person at MAGFest this year, but I always love the outcome of these virtual projects! Mixing chamber music is always a challenge, but the hardest part was lining up the rhythms perfectly—TIME FLEX YOU ROCK. The video editing was a fun challenge, but wow this piece was LONG. It is the longest video I have uploaded to my channel and certainly the most hours put into the video editing. My uncompressed video at the end was 13GB, which would have taken all day to upload with my slowwwww speed. Anyways, I hope you like this video, and thanks for listening!
