Singelée: Allegretto Op.53 | Zēlos Saxophone Quartet Jean-Baptiste Singelée (1812–1875) First Quartet for Saxophones, Op.53 IV. Allegretto Zēlos Saxophone Quartet: Julian Salazar, Soprano Johnny Selmer, Alto Robin Lacey, Tenor David Cortez, Baritone In June of 2019, Zēlos Saxophone Quartet were return guests of Sean MacLean on King FM’s Northwest Focus Live https://www.king.org/nw-focus-live/ Pronounced “ZEE-los” (from the Greek, literally "zeal”) and based in San Jose, California, Zelos https://www.zelosquartet.com/ had already performed as winners of the Ladies Musical Club ensemble competition. https://lmcseattle.org/competition/ They play on vintage instruments much closer in construction to what the Belgian inventor, Adolphe Sax, had in mind. In this video, they play the composer who encouraged Sax to develop the four principal members of the saxophone family, Jean-Baptiste Singelée (1812–1875). Singelée wrote what is very likely the first work ever for saxophone quartet, the Premier Quatuor of 1857. Before Zēlos left Seattle and returned to San Jose, Sean invited them to play the final Allegretto movement of that piece, choosing Frank Gehry’s music-inspired Museum of Pop Culture as a fitting metal background for their alloy instruments.
