Gema de las Heras, FTC Consumer Education Specialist, provides information about and tips on avoiding scams in this video. Scammers are increasingly targeting retirees' life savings by impersonating government agencies or well-known businesses. Reported losses have significantly increased, reaching nearly $3 billion in 2025. Scams often begin with lies designed to create urgency and fear, such as warnings about suspicious account activity or social security number issues. To protect yourself from financial scams, never transfer money, cryptocurrency, cash, or gold to unknown individuals in response to unexpected contact. Verify any suspicious communication by contacting the organization directly using a known, legitimate contact method, not the one provided in the suspicious message. To reduce unwanted calls, register your number with the National Do Not Call Registry and use your phone's call-blocking features. When shopping online, research sellers, read reviews, and always pay by credit card for better protection. Avoid sellers who only accept gift cards or cryptocurrency. When donating to charities, verify the charity's name and legitimacy using resources such as ftc.gov/charity, and donate by credit card or check. If you suspect identity theft, take immediate action by contacting the company used for the fraudulent transaction and reporting the incident to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. To prevent identity theft, secure personal documents, avoid carrying your social security card, use strong passwords with two-factor authentication, and consider freezing your credit.
