Umbilical cord hernia - An Enigma It is an often misdiagnosed and under-reported entity. Often confused with a small omphalocele. Believed to arise from persistent physiological mid-gut herniation. Its incidence is estimated to be 1 in 5000. Unlike omphalocele, it is BENIGN and NOT linked with chromosomal anomalies. Have better prognosis. Differential - Omphalocele and Gastroschisis Prenatal diagnosis of an umbilical cord hernia is important to prevent unwarranted parental anxiety. CAUTION is to clamp the umbilical cord distal to the abdominal site of insertion to prevent inadvertent bowel injury at the time of delivery.
