Blue Skyride, Grouse Mountain's first aerial tramway, was installed in 1965. After seeing the potential of tourism, the government of British Columbia provided funding for the project, as well as new lodge facilities, built at the top of the ridge, rather than in there original location. Before Blue, a series of homemade chairlifts starting at the current Skyline Drive at the very bottom of the mountain provided access to the mountain, and before those, a road called Mountain Highway provided access. After the addition of Red Skyride in 1976, Blue became a service lift not open to the public, providing mainly as transportation of product such as food and ski shop merchandise up to the facilities. After years of only being accessible by the low capacity Red, Grouse Mountain embarked on a project to greatly increase uphill capacity, which involved replacing Blue with a new gondola. Construction occurred the summer of 2024, and the lift opened to the public on December 12th, 2024. The lift was named Blue Grouse, paying homage to the birds that inhabit Grouse Mountain, the Blue Grouse. Blue Grouse Gondola is an 8 person Leitner-Poma Gondola. Despite the low capacity for a gondola at 1800 pph, the overall uphill capacity greatly increased over the previous lift setup, this lift having more than 2x the capacity of the Blue Skyride. Given how steep the line is, with a vertical rise of 2,622 feet over a length of 5,403 feet, the cabins use extra long hanger arms to give extra swing room. Given that this was recorded during early season, and barely any terrain was open, capacity on this lift seems to work well for crowds, and this a great addition to Grouse Mountain.
