Gothic Country, and Where to Start Exploring It

The Southern Gothic tradition runs back to the roots of country music, but in more recent years there's been a growing number of country artists that focus on exploring the dark side of rural life with their lyrics. Journey with me back to the early days of country, explore the gothic country scene sometimes called the Denver Sound, and let's look at some bands that are making great gothic country in 2024. I don't have especially strong feelings about this categorisation, but generally find their tone more similar to outlaw country than to the more pervasive darkness I feel in the songs of the artists in this video.
