The canton of Valais is one of the 26 cantons of Switzerland, situated in the southwestern part of the country. The canton is simultaneously one of the driest regions of Switzerland in its central Rhône valley and among the wettest, having large amounts of snow and rain up on the highest peaks found in Switzerland. 2. The canton was the location of the Valais witch trials between 1428 and 1447 in which at least 367 men and women were put to death. This event marks one of the earliest witch scares in late medieval Europe. The phenomenon later spread to other parts of the continent. 3. Sion is a Swiss town, a municipality, and the capital of the canton of Valais. 4. The canton of Valais is widely known for the Matterhorn and resort towns such as Crans-Montana, Saas Fee, Verbier and Zermatt. 5. The St. Bernard or St Bernard is a breed of very large working dog from the western Alps in Italy and Switzerland. They were originally bred for rescue by the hospice of the Great St Bernard Pass on the Italian-Swiss border. The hospice, built by and named after Italian monk Bernard of Menthon, acquired its first dogs between 1660 and 1670. The breed has become famous through tales of alpine rescues, as well as for its enormous size. According to legend, the brandy was used to warm the bodies of trapped people in avalanches or snow before help came. 6. 250 million years ago a herd of dinosaurs left their footprints in the Vieux-Emosson valley. Nine species lived here on what was once an beach of sand in the Jurassic period. Then plate techtonics got to work, breaking the earth's crust and forcing a new mountain range skywards. Eight Hundred Dinosaur footprints now reside at an altitude of 2400m, in the Vieux-Emosson valley on the French-Swiss border. 7. Euseigne is a village in the Swiss Alps, located in the canton of Valais. The village is well known for the fairy chimney rock formations named Pyramides d'Euseigne.
