Think of the breakdown in “Superstition,” as Stevie Wonder says “Superstition ain’t the way.” These gritty textures originated with the blues, and artists like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. Gabrielle also demonstrates the vocal fry, which she likens to trying to sound like a creaking door or clearing your throat. These kinds of growls can be damaging to your voice, however, so she advises ways to practice—transitioning between clean and gritty textures—and the amount of time you should expect to spend practicing this sort of singing.
