Edavani village, kurumba tribes. #kurumba #triballife #tribalvillage #tribal #tribalculture #tribes #westernghats #tribalindia Beautiful village in western ghats 👇🔗 • காட்டோடு கலந்த வாழ்க்கை – அட்டப்பாடி இருளர... The Kurumba tribe is one of the ancient indigenous communities living in the Western Ghats, mainly in the Nilgiri Hills across the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. They are recognized as a Scheduled Tribe and are believed to be among the earliest inhabitants of these mountain forests. The Kurumbas are considered one of the oldest tribal groups of South India, especially in the forests of the Nilgiris. Historical theories suggest they may be descendants of ancient communities linked to early South Indian kingdoms such as the Pallavas. Over centuries, they moved into the deep forests of the Western Ghats and developed a unique forest-based lifestyle. They traditionally lived in small forest settlements, often isolated from other communities. Their lifestyle was strongly connected to nature, relying on forest resources for survival. Kurumbas speak Kurumba languages, which belong to the Dravidian language family. Their speech contains a mixture of Tamil and Kannada influences and traditionally existed mainly as an oral language without a written script. They are famous for their dangerous honey-collecting techniques, climbing tall trees and cliffs using ladders made from bamboo and forest vines. Today, many Kurumbas work in tea, coffee, and vegetable plantations due to forest protection laws limiting hunting and gathering. The Kurumba tribe represents one of the most ancient forest communities of the Western Ghats. Their lifestyle, culture, and spiritual beliefs are deeply connected to the forest ecosystem. Known for their honey gathering skills, herbal knowledge, and rich oral traditions, the Kurumbas remain an important part of the indigenous heritage of South India.
