Places to see in ( Gallipoli - Italy ) Basilica Cattedrale di Sant'Agata The basilica of St. Agatha, virgin and martyr ( Basilica Cathedrālis S.Agathæ ), also known as the Duomo of Gallipoli , is dedicated to St. Agatha, the patron saint of the city of Gallipoli and the diocese of the same name. The current cathedral church was elevated to papal pontifical basilica in 1946 by Pope Pius XII, at the request of Bishop Nicola Margiotta . With Royal Decree of November 21, 1940 , the king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III elevated her to the rank ofnational monument because of its historical and artistic importance. It is the seat of an archpriest, of a chapter of the canons and of the parish of the same name. It is located in the center and at the highest point of the island, a site probably destined to a sacred area since ancient times. For the work were called local builders Francesco Bischettimi and Scipione Lachibari, who followed the design of the entire factory built by Giovan Bernandino Genuino. Due to the high number of canvases it can be considered a real Pinacoteca . It is a baroque church of the seventeenth century , rebuilt to replace the ancient Romanesque church dedicated to St. John Chrysostom . The canon of the cathedral D'Elia maintained that the Basilica dated back to the XII and therefore had to have a Norman -Romanesque-Pugliese style. In 1629 the ancient temple was destroyed and the first stone of the new church was laid, in the presence of the archpriest Michele di Valandia, high prelate of the Chapter, alternate of the absent bishop Rueda. The Cathedral Church is not equipped with a bell tower: the three bells (in the past four) are in fact placed on the terrace and mounted on the fronpizio with openings (this is the reason for a bell tower ). The tower that is adjacent to the Cathedral Basilica is instead the civic tower , consisting of two bells that mark the civil life. In the past there were two asymmetrical bell towers: the left one consisted of three floors and mullioned windows; it ended with a bell and two hour bats; the one on the right was larger and made up of five stories and ended with a domed end with a cross. Pietro Maisen from Valtellina in his book "Gallipoli and its surroundings illustrated by Pietro Maisen Valtellinese" states that "the Cathedral can rightfully call one of the less unworthy sanctuaries that the hand of man could raise to the Creator". The interior, with a Latin cross plan , consists of three naves separated by twelve Doric columns. To make the structure solemn is the presence of twelve baroque altars distributed as follows: St. Isidore San Francesco di Paola Epiphany or Adoration of the Magi Our Lady of Grace Sant'Agata Immaculate Conception Souls in Purgatory Assunta Coronation of Mary ( Gallipoli - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Gallipoli .
