Successful Patient Communication Techniques

Two techniques can help physicians communicate effectively with patients—and help patients better understand their treatment. First, physicians should ask open-ended questions to give patients the opportunity to say more than simply "yes" or "no." Instead of asking, "Do you understand?" physicians should ask, "What do you understand about this process?" Second, physicians should engage in a dialogue with their patients by asking questions and responding to questions. By asking open-ended questions and engaging in a dialogue, physicians can be sure that their patients understand the information being conveyed.
