How to upgrade your kids twist grip shifter to trigger shifter using the Shimano SL-M315 rapid fire shifter and 7speed Shimano 14-28 freewheel. Although my kids could change gears on the twist grip, they do seem to avoid changing gears most of the time. This is a relatively cheap upgrade and hopefully will encourage them to change gears out on the trails. It's quite an easy job but your local bike shop should be able to do it if preferred. Parts are available online or at your local bike shop. The bike in this video is a 6 speed 20" GT Stomper Prime with Tourney derailleur. The chain and derailleur are reused. As the 7 speed freewheel is slightly wider, a small flat washer may be needed to allow clearance from chain rubbing on frame in top gear. And the derailleur limit screws will need adjusting. The 24" bike did not require the freewheel as it was already a 7 speed. Parts you'll need....
