Director Tod Browning loosely based the story on a real event of his circus days, where a man masqueraded as an acrobat to evade the police. Joan Crawford always considered "The Unknown (1927)" a big turning point for her. She said it wasn't until working with Lon Chaney in this film that she learned the difference between standing in front of a camera and acting in front of a camera. She said that was all due to Chaney and his intense concentration, and after that experience she said she worked much harder to become a better actress. Chaney's performance certainly inspired co-star Crawford who wrote "Lon Chaney was my introduction to acting. The concentration, the complete absorption he gave to his characterization filled me with such awe I could scarcely speak to him...watching him have me the desire to be a real actress." The only known surviving prints are missing about 14 minutes of footage, mainly from the film's first half and depicting Alonzo's criminal career. For many years this film only existed in murky 9.5mm dupes on the black market. In March 1973, at a screening of this film at George Eastman House, archivist James Card said that Henri Langlois and his staff at the Cinémathèque Française discovered a copy of it in 1968 among other miscellaneous cans of film marked "l'inconnu" (films "unknown" due to missing titles, etc.). L'Inconnu is the literally translated French title of this film. The 2022 restoration of a newly found Czech print was shown at Pordenone Silent Film Festival and contains about 10 minutes of rediscovered footage. Joan Crawford was probably 21 years old during the making of this film. Although she claimed 1908 as her year of birth, most evidence points to her being born in 1906. The Unknown (1927) is widely regarded as the most outstanding of the Tod Browning-Lon Chaney collaborations and a masterpiece of the late silent film era. Critic Scott Brogan regards The Unknown worthy of "cult status." In some wide-angle scenes, Lon Chaney does use his own feet but for medium and close-up shots Tod Browning used a double named Dismuki (Paul Desmuke) who was born without arms. Later, Dismuki went on to tour with the Al G. Barnes Circus and Sideshow where he was billed as "The Man Who Doubled for Lon Chaney's Legs in The Unknown." In 2012, director Guy Maddin named this one of the 10 best films ever made in the decennial "Sight & Sound" Directors Poll of the Greatest Films of All Time. Greta Garbo originally was considered for the role of Nanon. Filming of The Unknown (1927) took place from February 7 to March 18, 1927 on a $217,000 budget. The Unknown (1927)'s working title was Armless Alonzo. In the original screenplay, Alonzo murders both the doctor and Cojo to eliminate them as witnesses before he returns to claim Nanon, but these scenes never made it to the final print.
