About this text The Long Discourses (長阿含經, Dīrgha Āgama) form one of the core collections of early Buddhist teachings. These extended dialogues preserve some of the Buddha’s most comprehensive instructions — addressing cosmology, ethics, meditation, social harmony, and the structure of the spiritual path. Together, they offer a wide-angle view of how the Buddha understood the world and guided beings toward liberation. This collection includes dialogues between the Buddha and kings, brahmins, ascetics, and disciples. Through careful questioning and patient explanation, the Buddha clarifies fundamental themes: the impermanence of all conditioned things, the law of cause and effect, the roots of suffering, and the cultivation of virtue, concentration, and wisdom. The long format allows ideas to unfold gradually, revealing not only what the Buddha taught, but how he taught — with compassion, precision, and deep respect for the listener’s capacity. The 長阿含經 also preserves early Buddhist perspectives on society and governance, right conduct for monastics and householders, and the inner qualities that support harmony in communities. Far from abstract philosophy, these discourses are practical guides for living with integrity, mindfulness, and care for others. As the opening collection of the Āgamas, the 長阿含經 serves as a gateway into the Buddha’s teachings — grounding later doctrines in clear moral vision and lived human experience.
