This mini doc was created by two 14-year-old girls in Toronto Canada in 2001. In their early days as sk8er girls and mini-proto-punks, Helena and Sarah would go down to Queen Street West almost religiously every weekend to cruise with Toronto's Alt scene, and hang out with crust punks on the sidewalk. The video project was just an idea the two girls had one day. They wrote up a bunch of questions on a notepad, borrowed Sarah's Dad's camera, and went downtown to talk to the freaks of Queen St. West. This was not a school assignment at all, but the little artistic ambitions of two adolescent teenage girls at the turn of the 21st Century. This video reveals the amazing array of weirdos, eccentrics, stoners, freaks, punk rockers, tourists, ravers, ditzes, geeks, and transients that frequented Queen West between University and Spadina during 2001. Although some shops remain, this strip has been largely corporatized beyond recognition since this video was created. This mini doc is a valuable snapshot of the diversity of Queen West - the tribalism of lifestyles in Toronto, before the internet fully took over, before the death of raw counterculture and style.
