A few pieces of bread, a few articles of clothing, a few pairs of socks. a few coins, a few photos, and, and, with nothing more to give, and nothing else to take, a few words. “I’ll be okay. Knowing you’re there is enough. You’re our hope. We love you.” The children don’t ask: Will I make it? Across the sea, through the sandstorms, safely through the gunshots and explosions, over the frozen mountains where the wind cuts like a knife, will I make it all the way there? And will we? Will we ever meet again? They don’t ask these things.
