Marine Heat Waves and Strange Gulf Stream SST Anomalies: Ocean Wilding, Weirding, and Whiplashing

Marine Heat Waves and Strange Gulf Stream SST Anomalies: Ocean Wilding, Weirding, and Whiplashing Marine heat waves are increasing in frequency, severity, and duration around the planet, especially in the past two years. I examine some of the details, and how we have monitored 14 apex species movements of the west coast of the USA since 2015 to see how their behavior has changed. Most species are negatively affected, but there are a few species that do better as they fill niche regions that other species vacate. Be sure to look at Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (SSTA) on Climate Reanalyzer and Earth Nullschool. Zoom in on the Gulf Stream moving northeasterly along the East Coast of North America. You can clearly see on Earth Nullschool that regions of the Gulf Stream are up to 6.7C warmer than normal, very close to regions that are -5C cooler than normal. This contrast is striking, and has been in place with some shifts since at least the beginning of 2025. Could this be a sign of AMOC slowdown? The Jury is Out... They also note that the more often such heat waves occur, the more difficult it is for affected areas to recover." https://phys.org/news/2025-03-scienti... Peer-reviewed paper (sorry, behind a paywall): Ocean extremes as a stress test for marine ecosystems and society In 2023–2024, widespread marine heatwaves associated with record ocean temperatures impacted ocean processes, marine species, ecosystems and coastal communities, with economic consequences. Despite warnings, interventions were limited. Proactive strategies are needed for inevitable future events. https://www.nature.com/articles/s4155... Article from a few years ago in Phys.org How short-term heat waves impact apex marine predators In addition to sharks and whales, the team also included tuna, turtles, seabirds and several types of mammals. They were able to track changes in apex marine creature behavior during heat waves that occurred in the northeast Pacific Ocean during the years 2020, 2019, 2015 and 2014. https://phys.org/news/2023-09-short-t... Peer-reviewed paper (Open Source): Impacts of marine heatwaves on top predator distributions are variable but predictable Abstract Marine heatwaves cause widespread environmental, biological, and socio-economic impacts, placing them at the forefront of 21st-century management challenges. However, heatwaves vary in intensity and evolution, and a paucity of information on how this variability impacts marine species limits our ability to proactively manage for these extreme events. Here, we model the effects of four recent heatwaves (2014, 2015, 2019, 2020) in the Northeastern Pacific on the distributions of 14 top predator species of ecological, cultural, and commercial importance. Predicted responses were highly variable across species and heatwaves, ranging from near total loss of habitat to a two-fold increase. Heatwaves rapidly altered political bio-geographies, with up to 10% of predicted habitat across all species shifting jurisdictions during individual heatwaves. The variability in predicted responses across species and heatwaves portends the need for novel management solutions that can rapidly respond to extreme climate events. As proof-of-concept, we developed an operational dynamic ocean management tool that predicts predator distributions and responses to extreme conditions in near real-time.
