‘They Are Getting Paid To STRIKE!’ | Birmingham Council Faces Growing Bin Strike Chaos

Bin collections in Birmingham were suspended on 1 December as agency workers joined striking council refuse staff in a dispute over pay, jobs, and alleged bullying. The action, supported by Unite, follows claims that agency workers faced harassment and threats of blacklisting for refusing to cross picket lines. Around 40 workers, including agency staff, took part in a rally at Smithfield depot before marching to the Council House. The strike, which began in March over pay and job security issues, has already caused waste to accumulate across the city. The council and recruitment agency stress they follow employment laws and prioritise worker safety, while union leaders describe the participation of agency staff as “hugely significant” in the ongoing industrial action.
