adapted from DISCOGS bio: The first name on his birth certificate was Wayland. Waylon Jennings learned guitar by age eight and at twelve he debuted on radio, after which he formed his first band, The Texas Longhorns. Jennings left high school at sixteen, determined to become a musician, and bounced around as a performer and DJ on Arizona radio stations. In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Waylon's first recording session, and hired him to play bass guitar. Jennings gave up his seat on the ill-fated 1959 flight that crashed and killed Buddy, J. P. "Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens. For the rest of his life he felt responsible because of an "I hope your ol' plane crashes" joke Waylon made before Holly took off without him. The guilt caused many bouts of drug abuse over the decades. He formed a rockabilly group, The Waylors, which around 1961 became the house band at "JD's", a club in Scottsdale, Arizona. This cover of Cindy Walker's "Dream Baby", a hit in '62 for Roy Orbison, is from that era of non-charting sides. Success came soon after he signed with RCA VICTOR in 1965.
