I continue my quest to make historically inspired skirts more comfortable and adaptable to a modern everyday life without a corset. After trying a couple of alternatives last time, I decided to experiment with elastic in this project after using it for shirring in my last dress. I planned to make the skirt a few inches bigger than my usual waist measurement, and then used an elasticated belt to bring it in. This way, it can expand to the full size of the skirt while maintaining a defined waist! Though the way I used the elastic wasn't necessarily how the belts were made, I found evidence that elastic belts were popular in the 1890s and early 1900s. For this project, I used three meters of brown cotton fabric, three meters of poly cotton for interlining, and two meters of cotton organdie for the stiffening. I used my trusty skirt pattern, which is a hybrid of my 1890s Keystone pattern and an Edwardian draft - soon to be available to all tiers on Patreon! Overall, I am really happy with this project as the main goals of using stash fabric for a comfortable and versatile historically inspired skirt were achieved :) *Sources* Cumming, Valerie, et al. *The Dictionary of Fashion History : Based on a Dictionary of English Costume 900-1900*.
