Kakie is the Okinawan Karate iteration of Push Hands, which is a tactile sensitivity development exercise. However, all too often we see people treat it like a competition of strength and endurance, turning it into more of a conditioning drill. However, one of the first lessons you'll learn in something like Tui Shou or Chi Sau, or really any variation of Listening Hands, Push Hands, Sticky Hands, etc... will tell you that if you never learn to eliminate tension and force, then you'll never develop the skills that push hands has to offer. A certain quote from Ei'Ichi Miyazato Sensei comes to mind, "The primary purpose of this training lies in the pulling and pushing and pull-push-sensitivity of the hands and arms thus achieved. It is not a competition of force." -Okinawa-den Goju-ryu Karate-do. Jitsugyo no Sekaisha, Tokyo 1978. I'm not going to claim there is one true way to do push hands, and naturally each individual dojo or ryuha will likely prefer to practice it in a way that is conducive to how their system works overall... but I do believe there are ways to practice that will let you get more out of it.
