A film by Gregory Stevens Awards for Young Musicians (AYM) patron, Ksenija Sidorova led an accordion orchestra at one of London's busiest railway stations on a fine spring Sunday afternoon. Ksenija, an internationally acclaimed musician, is a rare pioneer in the music business: she wants her instrument to break out of its age-old typecasting and to be celebrated for its virtuosity and musicality, to be enjoyed by new audiences worldwide, with refreshing repertoire that debunks stereotyping. Ksenija became an AYM patron so that she could actively encourage a new generation of young people who can confidently learn whatever instrument they like; she wants players to experience the joy of music-making and not feel that they will be pigeon-holed by old traditions or norms. "Almost any instrument can be played in any musical vein. In my case, I have always wished to present and secure the accordion's place on the classical platform." Ksenija lead AYM's group of young accordionists in a masterclass at the Royal Academy of Music one Sunday morning in March, after which the impromptu orchestra performed to an audience at Network Rail's Kings Cross. Without doubt, passengers will never have seen a youth accordion orchestra play while on the move.
