Tahir Kamran in his ‘Story of Pakistan’ write that the history of Pakistan cannot be confined to the traditional narrative which starts with Muhammad Qasim’s arrival in Sindh. However, Pakistan has a multilayered and complex history which demands sophisticated analysis. The author writes that Amir Khusrau is significant as a cultural icon, and his lifetime is so profound that he deserves a place, which should have been the aim of the revered founding father of Pakistan. “Khusrau symbolises the essence of the national cultural heritage of Pakistan,” writes the author. Regarding the Delhi Sultans and Mughals, Kamran writes that it is a wrong notion that they converted people forcibly to Islam. The reader also has a sense that the author is no big fan of Emperor Aurangzeb. ‘Story of Pakistan’ also sheds a vital light on the subject that the Muslims in general and the Muslim elite in particular sided with the British and damaged the “national cause”. On Page 67 of the book, the author has included a subtitle: ‘JinnahFrom Nationalist to Separatists’. The subsequent pages show Jinnah turned into a formidable foe of Congress when he was pushed against the wall. The book also details the Wardha Scheme commonly known as the Basic Education Scheme which Jinnah opposed tool and nail, marking the burning of all the bridges between the Muslim League and Congress after the general election of 1937. Tahir Kamran’s book also makes an interesting read about the politics of Punjab from the early years of Partition to the present-day monster the province has become for Pakistan. The book thoroughly takes a read to various facets of Pakistan's history and ends with the politics of Imran Khan and his subsequent arrest.
