On Hatteberg's People, keeping small towns alive and relevant is no easy task. Many small Kansas towns are drying up and blowing away. Not so in Madison, Kansas. Jason McClelland is an entrepreneur and life-long resident of that town, and for him --helping to keep the town alive is his mission. (Jason McClelland) "It's just a quaint beautiful little town that sits down in the valley with red-brick streets. We just need more people to come to Madison and see what it is all about." Jason McClelland is a successful entrepreneur who travels the world, but elects to live in Madison, Kansas. When the town's only restaurant burned, he saw a need. (Jason McClelland) "So here we are, we are without a restaurant, and I guess what got to me is that I was hungry." So, along with other townsfolk, Jason began a new restaurant in what was the old abandoned drug store. (Jason McClelland) "We got with several families in the community, we have some very generous families in the community, and we pooled their thoughts, efforts and money together and started a restaurant." (Jason McClelland) "The nice thing about a restaurant and living in a small town is our commute to work is a minute, we walk to the restaurant to eat, then we go back to work, then the commute home is another minute." Then, he encouraged his wife and sister's in law, to begin a new business called Rhinestones & Rust. (Amy McClelland) "It was kind of just another challenge for us. We started with what was a terrible building, and just to see the transformation, and then to bring that beautiful building back to life." "So, it just kind of all came together, that we could restore this building and do something for the community and also give these girls a good legitimate business to come in and operate out of." (Megan Broyles -- Sister-in-law - "So Jason just kind of followed suite in what we already loved to do. And in doing so he gave us the opportunity to do this full time. I recently quit my job, what I had been doing for 10 years, and now I get to do this full time which is really awesome." Thus began a new business that includes antiques and home renovation. (Jason McClelland) "I like change, I like to see change and I like to see things happen." Then, a couple of blocks away had been an old eyesore. Not anymore. "It was the first thing you see when you come into town, it is what welcomes you to Madison." A beautifully restored 1940's gas station now exists and it has become a tourist destination. (Jason McClelland) "It was a lot of work, but the improvement it made when you come into town is just a 180...." (Jason McClelland) "When I start something I want it done now and I want it done right." Then next to the Rhinestone and Rust business, a vacant spot where a theatre once stood is now about to become a park. (Jason McClelland) "and our intent, which we are just now getting started on, is to make a nice little park here that will be beautifully landscaped." Jason McClelland sees it as one project at a time. A small price to pay, to keep his home town alive. (Jason McClelland) "I'm older, and a small town is just pretty nice."
