I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - newly arranged by Marc Nerenberg - 20 Sept 2024

This past Tuesday was the 101st anniversary of the birth of Hank Williams. So the Friday before that, as the closing song of the Yellow Door Hootenanny, which I host, I recorded an off-the-cuff very simple rendering of the song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", that he had said was the prettiest song he'd ever written. But then I forgot to post it on his actual birthdate, so I figured that gave me a chance to record it again in a new, more elaborate, "prettier" arrangement I had in mind, and post the new one instead. So I worked out this new arrangement on the banjo on Thursday and performed it at the Yellow Door Hootenanny of 20 Sept 2024, this time as the opening song of the evening. I first learned this song in order to record it on solo harmonica to be played on the soundtrack of a National Film Board of Canada film many decades ago, and I've bookended this banjo-centric arrangement here by playing one of the multiple different versions that they had me record to be played in the background behind many different brief moments in the film. This was played on a 1927 Whyte Laydie Banjo tuned (open) at dCGCE, with a capo on the four long strings at the 5th fret to make the tuning dFCFA (an F6 chord), using mostly old-time thumb-lead two-finger picking, with brief allusions to clawhammer style here and there. It was recorded on 20 September 2024 at the Yellow Door Hootenanny in downtown Montreal.
