The Sunday Group 4 Feature Race at the Road America WeatherTech Vintage Weekend. We had a much more competitive field for this race weekend than the SVRA event in May. 21 Formula Fords took the field, 13 of them Club Fords (my class in the Lola). I qualified 8th in class but positions 2 through 9 were all a 2:34 lap time so it was all very close. Jimmy Vasser (1996 Indycar World Champion) had a motor issue in qualifying so he was starting at the back, giving the rest of us a fighting chance 😉 The race started well for me. I managed to pass Dan Rhodes in the white Tiga going into turn 1 and I was able to keep Rhodes and Dan Ariens behind (even though Jacques Dresang passed me into 5 with his Elden). Climbing the hill to turn 6 however a couple of cars got into each other requiring the rest of us to carefully navigate around the resulting melee. Unfortunately the two Dans behind me weren't so lucky, made contact and Rhodes was out of the race with a broken left A arm and Ariens was shuffled to the back of the pack. There were a couple of other cars that went off or had mechanicals on that lap so by turn three of lap 2 the marshals threw the double-yellow and we ended up behind the safety car. Fortunately they were able to clear the track quickly and we only lost a lap and a half. The rest of the race was a fun battle between myself, Chris Arrogante in his Crossle 35F, and Jacques fighting for 4th, 5th and 6th overall in Formula Ford. On lap 6 Vasser caught up to us and passed both myself and Jacques going into turn 5; I followed Jimmy through and passed Jacques on the run up to 6. Vasser then had some sort of brake failure going into turn 8 and had to retire the car. Chris, Jacques and I continued our three car train on the next and final lap. Jacques swung out to try and pass me at the finish but I had just enough to stay ahead for 5th overall and 5th in Club Ford, Jacques was 1st in Vintage Ford.
