6th June 2012 Gale force winds and rain hit the Sydney coastline but a powerful east coast low will maintain dangerous surf and abnormally high tides for at least another 24 hours. The low slung a squally southerly change up the coast on Tuesday with peak wind speeds hitting 128 km/h at Wattamolla, 117km/h at Port Botany, and 104 km/h at Sydney Airport. The weather station located on the Cecil Apartments at Cronulla Beach recorded wind gust of 106 km/h and 19.4mm of rain fell within the hour. Wind gusts continued to top the 100 km/h during the evening where wind speed averaged around 80 km/h. The gusty change was accompanied by a band of heavy rain which dropped over 20mm across most of the Sutherland Shire which bore the brunt of the gale force winds.. The deep low has also generated extremely dangerous seas and swells, averaging 8 metres today off the entire coastline.
