Burundi closes border with Rwanda and deports all Rwandans after accusing Kagame of backing rebels - The history of Rwanda and Burundi's tense relationship is layered, but recent years have seen the most pronounced rift. While periods of cooperation existed, ethnic tensions, accusations of supporting rebels, and political clashes over Burundi's 2015 political crisis sparked border closures, trade restrictions, and refugee displacements. But signs of reconciliation emerged in 2020 under new Burundian leadership, with leaders engaging in talks and cautiously rebuilding ties. However, all reconciliatory progress achieved in Burundi-Rwanda ties in recent times seems to have been undone overnight, with the two neighbours engaged in a renewed fiery spat. This spat, originating from Burundi accusing Rwanda of backing rebels wreaking havoc on Burundian soil, has resulted in Burundi closing its border with Rwanda and driving all Rwandans out of its territory. Why does Burundi think Rwanda is backing these rebels? How has Rwanda responded to these accusations? And could this feud have broader implications for the tension-laden broader East African community? On Thursday, January 11th, 2023, Burundi's internal affairs minister Martin Niteretse announced that it was cutting diplomatic ties with Rwanda, closing its border, and deporting Rwandan citizens in response to Rwanda's alleged assistance of a rebel group that has been assaulting Burundi. "Paul Kagame is a bad neighbour... We have suspended all relations with him until he comes to his senses. He is harbouring criminals who are destabilizing Burundi," Minister Martin Niteretse said during the announcement. The minister also revealed that Burundi's government had started deporting Rwandan nationals. "All the borders are closed. We don't need Rwandans here, and even those who were on our territory, we chased them out," he said. The souring of relations between these neighbours comes after Burundi's president, Evariste Ndayishimiye, famously accused Rwanda of hosting and training the Red Tabara rebel group, which claimed responsibility for an attack near Burundi's western border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo that left 20 people dead and nine others injured. The allegations were made in a live programme on a local radio station on December 29th, 2023, during which Ndayishimiye said, "Members of this rebel group Red-Tabara are welcomed, fed and taken care of by Rwanda. They are offered money and working offices by that country." ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✅SUPPORT US /AFFILIATE LINKS Use this affiliate link for your purchases at #MIZIZI International - https://bit.ly/3hajEY9 Support our channel - PayPal: newafricachannel(at)outlook.com Follow us on Instagram - / thenewafricachannel Follow us on Twitter - / thenewafricach1 Join us on Facebook - / thenew.africachannel.3 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✅COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER The New Africa Channel doesn't fully own some of the materials compiled in its videos.
