(28 Jan 1995) Italian/Nat Italy's former neo-fascist party was reborn as the National Alliance in a blaze of laser light on Saturday. The media tycoon and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi was among the audience for the launch of the new party in the spa town of Fiuggi. The National Alliance has already ditched much of the old ideology and praised anti-fascism as a necessary step towards Italian democracy. A blaze of laser lights inscribed the party's new name on a huge backdrop during Saturday's congress in Fiuggi, a spa town east of Rome. Silvio Berlusconi, the former premier and media tycoon, joined the two and half thousand delegates from across the political spectrum to witness the unveiling of the National Alliance. Alesandra Mussolini, the daughter of the founder of Italian fascism, Benito Mussolini, was also amongst party leaders to see in the new face of Italian rightwing politics. During the congress, the new party jettisoned old fascist principles and rejected a call in the old party charter for "continuity" with the Fascist period. SOUNDBITE: "National alliance can certainly be like the overtaking century which hands over to the irreversible judgement of history, all the troglodytisms, all the ideologies, and all the hatred and passions which characterized the 20th century." Berlusconi's rise, the National Alliance's surge in popularity and its simultaneous re configuration are part of the recent transformation of the Italian political landscape, now littered with "ex" parties. To understand an association of free man to participate to the political life and to contribute to the government of the institution is a great act of faith." A high-level of nostalgia among the rank and file for the movement's neo-fascist heritage reigned throughout the congress, and some commentators are skeptical about just how much the party is changing. But some hard-liners disagree.
