Osaka Museum of History https://www.osakamushis.jp Ikutama Shrine https://ikutamajinja.jp Interview with the priest of Ikutama Shrine Yasoshima In ancient times, the Osaka Plain was an inland sea filled with seawater. At the entrance to the sea, there was a protruding peninsula, and it was a sacred place where religious ceremonies were held. A global "sea regression phenomenon" occurred, and the land rose. As a result, various islands of different sizes began to appear. These were called "Yasoshima." When the emperor saw this, he associated the gods of the "Eight Great Islands," Ikushima no Okami and Tarushima no Okami, with the myth of the creation of the country. He then prayed for peace for the land and its people, and ruled with the divine power of his own jeweled body. This became a tradition, and the newly ascended emperor would always perform this ritual the year after the Daijosai. Time passed, and during the Heian period, the ritual came to be held as a lavish festival. This was called the "Yasoshima Festival." However, the accession of Emperor Gohorikawa was the last Yasoshima Festival, and memories of the festival were lost from people's memories. ◼︎Table of contents 1.
