The cockpit of the Westland Lysander IIIa is very unique, especially to pilots from North America. Many of the controls and indicators are different from modern aircraft and even from other historic British aircraft like the Spitfire and Hurricane and Moths which Dave also flies. Here's an explanation of how it all works during a flight, accompanied by personal helmet-cam video clips of flying the rare aeroplane. It's the only Lysander, and the only Bristol Mercury engine, operating in North America. Dave is the only current Lysander pilot on the continent. For "Climbing Away", the album of Dave's aviation songs -- and many other aviation stories -- see www.hadfield.ca Dave has been travelling in this Lysander, taking it far from its home base, for many years. It is currently based in Collingwood, ON., and is owned by Lysander Historical Aviation of Toronto. It was built in Canada by National Steel Car in 1942, saw service in the BCATP during the war, then was preserved by pilot-restorer-preserver Harry Whereatt of Sask., and fully restored by Michael Potter with Vintage Wings of Canada 2008-10. It is an extremely original aircraft: nearly all of the parts on it are stock.
