How about some nice brown oak - this is oak that has been attacked by the bracket fungus, and is a lovely colour; or some spalted beech, which is regular beech wood that has also been attacked and is in the early stages of decay - the colour variations are great! You will not find some of this wood in most commercial timber yards, but it is great for the crafts person to make some truly inspirational furniture, and if you are lucky it will not cost too much. I use a small planer thicknesser which is great for preparing 8" wide boards - yes it is small but I do not have a lot of space! The machine is noisy to use, but has paid for itself very quickly in terms of giving me a good supply of dimensioned, planned timber, and I would highly recommend it to the low volume user.
